I started drinking protein shakes a couple weeks ago in hopes to keep my calories up (because of breast feeding) and to help with the rebuilding of the muscle tissue. I have drank it before many times over the course of my various fitness journeys but have never been a huge fan of it.
I have tried several different brands, several different flavors and several different recipes. My favorite whey so far has been the Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard, Double Rich Chocolate. But because this time I am breastfeeding and wanted it to be natural and a little more filling I gave the Optimum Nutrition 100% Natural Oats and Whey Milk Chocolatea try and I am really liking so far.
In my hopes of hiding the gritty-ness of the whey I was trying to figure out the best way to get my protein down. And then a light bulb when off 🙂 I usually put chocolate in my iced coffee so I gave it a try. It was delicious! Here is how I make my iced coffee on the mornings I do an intense workout and drink my whey:
- 1 Scoop of Optimum Nutrition 100% Natural Oats and Whey Milk Chocolate
- Coffee – I like the Dunkin Donuts k-cups
- 6-8 Ice cubes
- Half and half – or any type of milk you prefer, when I am trying to stay away from dairy I use almond milk and it adds a bit of a nutty flavor
- Chocolate syrup or any type of coffee flavoring you think would mix well with the chocolate
- Shaker cup
I like to add my ice cubes first and then the milk, chocolate syrup and whey. Then I brew the hot coffee right over top. I have used both regular coffee, made in a coffee pot, and the Keurig k-cups. I like a coffee taste so I make sure the coffee is strong. If I brew it in the Keurig I brew it on the small cup and the ice waters it down a bit so I still have that coffee taste. I can almost not even taste the whey and I just have to give it a couple of shakes while I am drinking it to keep it all stirred up. So yummy!!
Give it a try and let me know what you think!
